Detailed Itinerary: 4 Days Kibale Chimpanzee Tracking Safari
Day 1 – Drive from Kampala or Entebbe to Kibale National Park
Your safari begins early in the morning with a scenic drive from Kampala or Entebbe towards western Uganda. The 5–6-hour journey takes you through lush tea plantations, banana gardens, and small towns as you ascend into the beautiful Fort Portal region — framed by the Rwenzori Mountains, also known as the Mountains of the Moon.
Upon arrival in Kibale, you’ll check into your lodge surrounded by the serenity of the rainforest. Later, you can take a guided nature walk around the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed conservation area famous for its birdlife and primate sightings. Here, you may spot red-tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, and a variety of colorful birds, including the great blue turaco.

Day 2 – Chimpanzee Tracking Experience in Kibale National Park
This is the highlight of your safari — an unforgettable morning with our closest relatives in the wild. After an early breakfast, you’ll report to the Kanyanchu Visitor Center for a briefing conducted by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers. You’ll then begin your trek into the rainforest in search of a habituated chimpanzee group.
As you walk through the dense undergrowth, the sounds of the forest come alive — birdcalls, rustling leaves, and distant hoots signaling the presence of chimpanzees. Once you locate the troop, you’ll spend up to one hour observing their fascinating behavior: mothers nursing their young, juveniles playing in the treetops, and dominant males displaying strength through drumming and loud calls. Watching them interact up close is both emotional and mesmerizing, a humbling reminder of our shared ancestry.
After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, you can opt for a cultural visit to the local communities to learn about traditional medicine, basket weaving, and how the people coexist with the wildlife around them.
Day 3 – Exploration of the Crater Lakes Region & Fort Portal Tour
After breakfast, set out to explore the scenic crater lakes and rolling hills surrounding Fort Portal. This region is dotted with volcanic lakes, lush tea estates, and viewpoints offering panoramic vistas of the Rwenzori Mountains. You’ll visit Lake Nkuruba or Lake Nyinambuga, both stunningly beautiful and perfect for quiet reflection or photography.
Later, take a short tour of Fort Portal town — one of Uganda’s most charming highland towns known for its laid-back atmosphere and cultural heritage. You may visit the Tooro Palace, the local markets, or a tea estate to see how Uganda’s finest teas are cultivated and processed. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and a relaxing night amidst the forest’s sounds.
Day 4 – Return to Kampala or Entebbe
After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely morning and then begin your journey back to Kampala or Entebbe. You’ll stop for lunch en route and arrive in the late afternoon. This marks the end of your incredible primate adventure through Uganda’s green heartlands — a journey of connection, discovery, and pure natural wonder.
